Alan Cumming Welcomes Launch of New LGBT Yes Group

by Fiona MacGregor

Alan Cumming has today welcomed the launch of the new LGBT group on Yesscotland.net where supporters of an independent Scotland can share the Yes message and organise campaign activities. Speaking about the launch, which comes ahead of Scotland's first Pride event of 2012 in Edinburgh tomorrow, the actor said it is "vitally important that the voices of LGBT people are heard in the run up to the referendum".

Mr Cumming said: "This week, as Scotland's lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender (LGBT) community is busy preparing for Pride celebrations across the country, and I'm proud to see the launch of an LGBT section on Yesscotland.net

"The campaign for LGBT rights has been a long and rocky road in which many people have had to overcome an array of negative attitudes. We've had to learn to not be afraid to stand up for equality, fairness and our own identities. Does that ring a bell, anyone?

"Yes, the LGBT struggle and the quest for an independent Scotland have much in common and it's vitally important that the voices of LGBT people are heard in the run up to the referendum.

"Voting Yes will mean decisions about our future and our country's future are made be the people of Scotland. It will mean a Scotland where the voices of the people who live here are heard and acted upon. As a section of society whose voices were silenced for so long, I believe LGBT people know better than many how important that is, and I urge those who support the Yes campaign to get involved and help spread the message that an independent Scotland is about a more equal and fairer future for all of Scotland's people."
